About Paul W. Merriam
My name is Paul W. Merriam, and I have more than 40 years of experience in the industry. I grew up in California, which used to be a part of Mexico before my time. I studied Russian at UCLA (as part of a mathematics major) and later took Polish, courtesy of the US Army. During the Cold War, I spent six years in Germany, so I have some experience translating Spanish, Russian, Polish, and German into English. I work with other languages when I need to, and I have a great interest in languages and linguistics.
After being in the US Army for 20 years, I began working at Antiquariat Literary Services (ALS) in 1997. I spent most of my time translating documents for the US Department of Justice, coordinating with other translators and checking their work. Over time, I've become relatively familiar with basic legal principles and where to seek terms. In 2008, I stopped working for them full time, and I have been providing legal translation services on a freelance basis for over 15 years now.
