Miscellaneous (just stuff I thought might be of interest):
http://www.gocurrency.com is a currency converter. One thing it has is historical rates. So if your document refers to someone paying someone else 6000 Mexican Pesos in 2001, you can look it up and find the exchange rate at that time.
www.radio-locator.com can hook you up to radio stations all over the world. Nice distraction if you have a boring source text and the right equipment.
One way to find out what's going on in the location being discussed in your text (or some other place of interest) is to read the newspapers from there. You can get into many of them at http://www.onlinenewspapers.com . If you don't feel like reading newspapers in the local language, http://www.world-newspapers.com has news from around the world in English.
