Introduction to my web site about legal translation and a bit about me.
My name is Paul W. Merriam. I grew up in California (which used to be part of Mexico, though that was before my time). I studied Russian at UCLA (as part of a mathematics major) and later took Polish, courtesy of the US Army. I spent six years in Germany during the Cold War. So I have some experience in translating Spanish, Polish, German and Russian into English. I work with other languages when I need to, and I have a great interest in languages and linguistics.
After being in the US Army for 20 years, I began working at Antiquariat Literary Services (ALS) in 1997. A lot of the work I did was translating documents for the US Department of Justice, arranging for other people to translate them and checking their work. Over this time, Iíve become fairly familiar with basic legal concepts and where to go looking for terms. In 2008, I stopped working for them full time. I now translate on a freelance basis.
